Maternity benefit in Bangladesh — common questions
How long is maternity leave in Bangladesh?+
Under the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006 (section 46) a woman worker gets 16 weeks — 8 weeks before and 8 weeks after the expected delivery — with full maternity benefit. Many companies and the public sector give longer leave by policy.
How is maternity benefit calculated?+
Section 48 sets the daily rate as the average daily wage: total wages paid in the 3 months before notice divided by the days actually worked in those months. That rate is paid for each day of maternity leave.
Who is eligible for maternity benefit?+
A woman worker who has worked for the employer for at least 6 months immediately before the expected delivery date. Benefit is not payable if she already has two or more surviving children, though she is still entitled to leave.
When is maternity benefit paid?+
The Act allows payment in two parts — for the period before delivery within 3 working days of proof of expected delivery, and the rest within 3 working days of proof of delivery — or in one lump sum.
